چکیده

We propose a new analytic approximation for the luminosity function of galaxies. The suggested expression behaves like the Schechter function at the faint end (φ ∼ L) but departs considerably at the bright end (L >> L∗). We argue here that such a behavior may provide a better fit for the current observational data than does the Schechter function. Its practical interest is stressed by considering roughly the data set provided by the Stromlo-APM redshift survey. Implications on the estimates of the matter density parameter from mass-to-light ratio are also briefly discussed.

Galaxy luminosity function and its cosmological evolution: testing a new feedback model depending on galaxy-scale dust opacity

We present a new version of a semi-analytic model of cosmological galaxy formation, incorporating a star formation law with a feedback depending on the galaxy-scale mean dust opacity and metallicity, motivated by recent observations of star formation in nearby galaxies and theoretical considerations. This new model is used to investigate the effect of such a feedback on shaping the galaxy lumin...

The galaxy luminosity function around groups

The galaxy luminosity function around groups. ABSTRACT We present a study on the variations of the luminosity function of galaxies around clusters in a numerical simulation with semi-analytic galaxies, attempting to detect these variations in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. We subdivide the simulation box in equal-density regions around clusters, which we assume can be achieved by selecting obj...

Luminosity dependence of the spatial and velocity distributions of galaxies: Semi-analytic models versus the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

By comparing semi-analytic galaxy catalogues with data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we show that current galaxy formation models reproduce qualitatively the dependence of galaxy clustering and pairwise peculiar velocities on luminosity, but some subtle discrepancies with the data still remain. The comparisons are carried out by constructing a large set of mock galaxy redshift surve...

Constraints on σ8 from galaxy clustering in N -body simulations and semi-analytic models

We generate mock galaxy catalogues for a grid of different cosmologies, using rescaled N body simulations in tandem with a semi-analytic model run using consistent parameters. Because we predict the galaxy bias, rather than fitting it as a nuisance parameter, we obtain an almost pure constraint on σ8 by comparing the projected two-point correlation function we obtain to that from the SDSS. A sy...

The Effects of Photoionization on Galaxy Formation — III: Environmental Dependence in the Luminosity Function

Using semi-analytic modeling techniques, we calculate the luminosity function of galaxy populations residing in cold dark matter halos of different mass. We pay particular attention to the influence of the reionization of the Universe on the number of faint galaxies and to the effects of dynamical friction and tidal limitation of satellites on the number of bright galaxies. We find substantial ...
